Banshee | Wailing Spirit

In Irish folklore, a Banshee (from the Irish bean sí, meaning "woman of the fairy mound") is a female spirit whose wailing or shrieking foretells the imminent death of a family member. Unlike modern horror depictions, she is traditionally seen as a messenger rather than a malevolent killer.

Appearance and Forms

The Banshee is known for her fluid appearance, often manifesting in three primary forms, which some scholars link to the Celtic triple goddess (maiden, mother, crone):

  • The Beautiful Young Woman: Often pale with long, flowing silver or red hair, dressed in a white or shimmering silver dress.
  • The Stately Matron: A dignified woman in middle age, typically dressed in mourning attire.
  • The Haggard Crone: An old woman with grey hair, red eyes from constant weeping, and a green dress covered by a grey hooded cloak.
  • Common Detail: She is frequently seen brushing her long hair with a silver comb. Folklore warns that finding a comb on the ground is a bad omen; picking it up may lure you away or provoke the spirit.

The Cry (Keening)

The Banshee’s most iconic trait is her piercing wail, known in Irish as caoineadh (keening). This sound is described as a mixture of:

  • A mournful, soft chant for families she loves.
  • A blood-curdling scream (enough to shatter glass) for those she loathes.
  • The howling of a wolf or the screech of a wild goose.

Origins and Family Ties

  • Keening Tradition: The legend likely evolved from the medieval custom of "keeners"—professional women paid to wail at funerals. Because these women were often paid in alcohol and seen as "sinners," it was believed they were cursed to continue their mourning after death.
  • Ancient Lineages: Traditionally, she only wails for families of "pure" Irish or noble descent, specifically those with surnames starting with O' or Mac (e.g., O'Neill, O'Brien, McCarthy).
  • Fairy vs. Ghost: While the name suggests she is a sídhe (fairy), many tales describe her as the ghost of a murdered woman or a mother who died in childbirth.
